When time and situation permit, bomb searches should be made in all areas prior to the arrival of the Principal. When time and/or situation do not permit the completion of a thorough search, priority will be given to the immediate areas the Principal will occupy, with advisement made to the lead advance agent/site agent of the required curtailment. These searches are conducted in an attempt to locate any hazardous devices that may have been placed in or near an area in which the Principal will be present. Since the configuration of an improvised hazardous device and its emplacement depend on the ingenuity of the bomber, sufficient time must be allotted to the search teams to complete an efficient and thorough search. Physical security of the area should be scheduled to coincide with the beginning of the search. The following information provides general guidelines for conducting searches.
