Why Knock 'em Dead ? In 1985, when this book was first published, we began by answering the question "Why another book about interviewing?" Because the others stop at that critical point when the tough questions start flying. Sadly, that critique of the many other books out there is still valid. And with over three million Knock 'em Dead books in print worldwide, there seems ample evidence that readers agree with my 1985 assessment. Still, Knock 'em Dead has not stood still. In the years since that first edition, this book has grown in size and scope every year; it has doubled in length and now covers the entire job search process. I am confident that it does so with a broader scope, and with more depth and originality, than any other book in the field. The ever-expanding page count reflects my responses to the constantly changing realities of the world of work. Although we have revised the work throughout, this flexible approach is perhaps best exemplified by one of the newer sections, "When You See Clouds on the Horizon." This appendix takes into account the sobering reality that you can no longer rely on long years of service to a single company to keep a career in high gear. I wrote Knock 'em Dead because too much of the job search advice I could find on the shelves of my bookstore was infantile at best and detrimental to one's professional health at worst. The vast majority of job hunting books lack the practical advice of what to do in the heat of battle. Knock 'em Dead will take you through the whole process-from putting the paperwork together to negotiating salary to your best advantage. Of course, the core of the book still helps you resolve the job seeker's most dreaded question: "How on earth do I answer that one?" Here, you'll get hundreds of the tough, sneaky, mean, and low-down questions that interviewers love to throw at you. With each question, I will show you what the interviewer wants to find out about you, and explain how you should reply. After each explanation, you'll get a sample answer and suggestions on how to customize it to your individual circumstances. The examples themselves come from real life, things people like you have done on the job that got them noticed. I'll show you how they packaged those experiences, how they used their practical experience to turn a job interview into a job offer. Perhaps you are trying to land your first job or are returning to the workplace. Maybe you are a seasoned executive taking another step up the ladder of success. Whoever you are, this book will help you, because it shows you how to master any interview and succeed with any interviewer. You will learn that every interviewer tries to evaluate each candidate by the same three criteria: Is the candidate able to do the job? Is he or she wi11ingto put in the effort to make the job a success? And last but not least, is he or she manageable? You will learn how to demonstrate your superiority in each of these areas, under all interview conditions. The job interview is a measured and ritualistic mating dance in which the best partners whirl away with the glittering prizes. The steps of this dance are the giveand- take, question-and-response exchanges that make meaningful business conversation. Learn the steps and you, too, can dance the dance. Your partner in the dance, obviously, is the interviewer, who will lead with tough questions that carry subtleties hidden from the untrained ear. You will learn how to recognize those questions-within-questions. And with this knowledge, you will be cool, calm, and collected, while other candidates are falling apart with attacks of interview nerves. How do you discover hidden meanings in questions? I recently heard a story about a young woman who was doing very well on an interview for a high-pressure job in a television studio. The interviewer wanted to know how she would react in the sudden, stressful situations common in T\l, and got his answer when he said, "You know, I don't really think you're suitable for the job. Wouldn't you be better off in another company?" With wounded pride, the job hunter stormed out in a huff. She never knew how dose she was, how easy it would have been to land the job. The interviewer smiled: He had caught her with a tough question. Did the interviewer mean what he said? What was really behind the question? How could she have handled it and landed the job? The great answers to tough questions like that and many others are waiting for you in the following pages. The job interview has many similarities to good sodal conversation. job offers always go to the interviewee who can turn a one-sided examination of skills into a dynamic exchange between two professionals. In Knock 'em Dead, you will learn the techniques for exdting and holding your interviewer's attention, and at the same time, for promoting yourself as the best candidate for the job. This book will carry you successfully through the worst interviews and job hunting scenarios you will ever face. It is written in five interconnected parts. "The Well-Stocked Briefcase" gets you ready for the fray. You will quickly learn to build a resume with broad appeal and to use a unique customizing technique guaranteed to make your application stand out as something spedal. You will also learn how to tap into thousands of job openings at all levels that never reach the newspapers. Once you are ready for action, "Getting to Square One" examines all the approaches to getting job interviews and teaches you simple and effective ways to set up multiple interviews. Tills section ends with techniques to steer you successfully through those increasingly common telephone screening interviews. "Great Answers to Tough Interview Questions" gives you just that, and teaches you some valuable business lessons that will contribute to your future success. All successful companies look for the same things in their employees, and everything they're looking for you either have or can develop. Sound impossible? I will show you the twenty key personality traits that can convey your potential for success to any interviewer. "Finishing Touches" assures that "out-of-sight, out-of-mind" will not apply to you after you leave the interviewer's office. You will even discover how to get a job offer after you have been turned down for the position, and how to negotiate the best salary and package for yourself when a job offer is made. Most important, the sum of those techniques will give you tremendous self-confidence when you go to an interview: No more jitters, no more sweaty palms. The final section, "In Depth," includes new ideas for long-term career survival and some important advice on keeping your finandal boat afloat during tough times. If you want to know how business works and what savvy businesspeople look for in an employee, if you want to discover how to land the interview and conquer the interviewer, then this book is for you. Knock 'em Dead delivers everything you need to win the job of your dreams. Now get to it, step ahead in your career, and knock 'em dead. - Martin john Yate New York. ...
