About the authors. Guus van der Bie MD (1945) worked from 1967 to 1976 as a lecturer at the Department of Medical Anatomy and Embryology at Utrecht State University in the Netherlands. As a family physician since 1976, he has recognized the importance of phenomenology and Goethean science for understanding the human being in health and illness. Next to his practice he stayed involved in teaching medical students at Utrecht State University and physicians, and therapists. In 1998 he was one of the originators of Renewal of Medical Education, a project of the Louis Bolk Instituut to produce a complement to the current biomedical scientific approach of the human being. Since 2004 he is a teacher of complementary medicine and Medical Humanities at the Medical School of Utrecht State University and teaches anthroposophic medicine at the University of Witten/Herdecke (Germany). He is a member of the Medical Section of the School of Spiritual Science at the Goetheanum, Dornach, Switzerland. Tom Scheffers MD (1979) was already proofreading the Bolk’s Companions when he was still a medical student. He worked as an intern in pediatrics and studied at the Eugen-Kolisko-Akademie in Germany before completing his general practitioner’s training. He now works as a GP, combining mainstream and anthroposophic medicine. He is a member of the Medical Section of the School of Spiritual Science at the Goetheanum, Dornach, Switzerland. Christina van Tellingen MD (1949) has been a family physician in California since 1982. From the beginning of her medical studies she has recognized the importance of a new approach to science for understanding the human being in health and disease. In her practice, she has found the phenomenological method of observation in systems biology of great value in understanding and treating patients. She has taught medical students and physicians in the United States, Canada, and Europe. Recently, she has been teaching medical students and physicians at the University of Witten/Herdecke, Germany at Herdecke. In 1998 she was one of the originators of Renewal of Medical Education, a project at the Louis Bolk Instituut to offer a compliment to the current biomedical scientific approach to the human being.
