Drug Variants of the Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India. AASAVA AND ARISHTA. These are medicinal preparations made by soaking the drugs, either in powder form or in the form of a decoction, in a solution of either sugar or jaggery for a specific period of time, during which it undergoes a process of fermentation, generating alcohol, thus facilitating the extraction of the active principles contained in the drugs. The alcohol, so generated, also serves as a preservative. In Indian medicine, inoculum of yeast comes from the flowers of Woodfordia fruticosa Kurz. (Dhaataki). These are nectariferous and highly tanniferous and serve the same purpose as do hops (Humulus lupulus L.) in brewing. In some preparations, Madhuca indica (Madhuuka) flowers, honey or resins are used for initating the process of fermentation. The Aasavas are prepared from the juices of fresh plants or water-soaked dry herbs, whereas the Arishtas are prepared from the decoction of the herbs. At the final stage, the prepared medicine is moderately alcoholic (up to 12% by volume) and is taken mixed with an equal volume of water (10–30 mL twice or thrice daily).
