After spcudiug one-third of my life practicing and teaching the Oriental fighting arts, I was honored to be the first American ever accepted as a personal student by the master of the last historically unbroken ninjutsu tradition in Japan. After my initial training sessions in the moonlight of the Japanese countryside, my feelings of mere honor changed to an awesome realization that I had at last found the ultimate fighting art and philosophical system for me. Here were the original teachings of the Oriental warrior ways, not at all dilut<'d for the sake of commercialization or sport, kept alive by an elite group of conscientious, enlightened individuals. The purpose of this book is to share some of their teachings, and some of my observations during my apprenticeship to the ninja. In these pages I have done my best to recall my training and conversations as accurately as possible, and to fill in the necessary background information and history. The conversations have been translated from Japanese into natural English and edited for continuity, with an attempt to preserve the sense and atmosphere of the originals. Naturally, the responsibility for any mistakes or misinterpretations is mine alone. I would like to express my deep gratitude to and admiration for Masaaki Hatsumi, thirty-fourth master of the Togakure-ryu ninjutsu tradition, for all his patience, generosity, and acceptance over the years. My association with Hatsumi Sensei is all the more rare and special to me now that he no longer accepts new personal students. Thanks are due to the staff of the Mie Prefecture Iga-Ueno Ninja Museum for information on the military aspects of Iga-ryu niryutsu, and for allowing me to photograph and reproduce here their displays and facilities. I also wish to thank Richard Heinrich, T. C. Cox, and Laura Hardin for their expert photography, and Rumiko Urata for her long hours of assistance in translating Japanese documents. I have greatly appreciated the friendship and aid of Koyu Tanaka and Tsunehisa Tanemura, who helped me get established in my new home in Japan. Special acknowledgment goes to Joseph Beaver, who took over my training school for me when I went from teacher in America to trainee in the Orient. Stephen K. Hayes. ...
