This volume represents a continuing effort ta cover comprehensively the undassified information on explosives and related subjects in the same manner and format as in previous volumes. The re ader is urged to obtain the previous volumes and to re ad bath the PREFACE and INTRODUCTION in Volume 1 in order to understand the au thors' way of pre sen ting the subject matter. In preparation for and during the writing of this Encyclopedîa, the au thors have consulted freely with and have had.the cooperation· of many individu ais who contributed their expert knowledge and advice. This fact is acknowlcdged throughout the text at the end of the subject item. A listing of many ethers who have helped in various ways wou]d be impractical. Dr Julius Roth, principal scientist at Management Science Associates, Los Altos, California, contributed significantly in the literature searching and writing of many of the articles for this volume un der Con tract DAAA21-73-C-0725.
