This volume represents a cominuing effort to cover comprehensively the unclassified information on explosives and related subjects in the same maooer and format as in previous volumes. The reader is ·urged to obtain che previous volumes and to read both che PREFACE & INTRODUCTION in Volume 1 in arder to understand the authors' way of presenting the subject matter. In preparation for and during the writing of this Encyclopedia, the au thors have oonsulred freely with .and have had the cooperation of many individuals who conrribured the ir expert knowledge and advice. This fact is acknowledged rhroughour the rext at the end of the subjecr item. A listing of many ethers who have helped in various ways would be impraccical. Scientists at the Franklin Insritute Research Laboratories, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (See overleaf) have·contributed sîgnîficantly in the organizing, litera ture searchîng and writing of much of the marmscript for this volume 1. Dr R.F. Walker, Explosives Division Chief, has provided financial support and encouragement to continue .this work to its conclusion. Further financial support is expected from the sale of copies ro non·sovemmemal agencies and individuals by the National Technical Information Service, US Department of Commerce, Springfield, Virginia 22151. This additional source of funas will permit future volumes to be published much sooner.
